Rallies, activist sessions, labor platforms, global gatherings and more—-during this year’s 16 Days of Violence Against Women, Solidarity Center’s diverse efforts around the world are all centered on the same goal: ratification and implementation of a treaty to end...
El Salvador
Despite high levels of poverty and weak citizen security, the Solidarity Center successfully partners with Salvadoran union organizations across the political spectrum to seek an end to corruption, repressed wages and anti-union practices, as well as to advocate effectively for improvements in labor law and labor inspection.
The Solidarity Center’s groundbreaking work to defend the rights of workers in the sugar cane and aeronautical industries with union partners, FESINTRAINZUCADES and SITTEAIES, has led to increased union representation and collective bargaining agreements for workers in both areas. In the sugar cane sector in particular, this focuses on workers throughout the supply chain, including sugar cane cutters and those at sugar cane refineries and soft-drink manufacturing plants.
The Solidarity Center also strives to promote decent work in the Salvadoran garment sector through labor law enforcement, union organizing and other training and support assistance to new unions that largely represent workers making goods within global apparel supply chains. In addition, the Solidarity Center promotes regional exchanges among Central American garment worker unions so they can develop and implement more impactful joint strategies to advocate for labor rights with transnational employers. Because this industry is largely comprised of women workers, the Solidarity Center also promotes greater participation and leadership of women in garment sector unions through innovative mentoring and training programs.
